Trust the greek sun god Apollon and tennen-baka norse god of light Baldr to turn a dark, depressive mood around into a bright, happy affair. But the second time around, it’s not just Yui showing her concern. Yui and Hades try to go star gazing and it rains both times – misfortune. For all the flak I’ve given Hades in the first 3 episodes it was at this point I actually felt bad for him, for just that split second though. Hades suffers from a physically manifesting curse stemming from the wrath of all the grudging souls in the Underworld. Astronomy is his one true passion because when he’s all alone choosing to shield everyone from the misery he brings, he looks up to the stars from the Underworld down below and appreciates its beauty. Oh Hades, such love and concern from Yui! This cafeteria obviously doesn’t have strawberry daifuku but anyone a mile away could’ve put those 2 ingredients together and that’s just what Yui did. Fellow greek gods Apollon and Dee-dee have seen Hades buy daifuku 「大福」(a soft mochi snack which literally means good luck, the perfect snack for constantly out of luck Hades) and strawberries, concluding those are uncharacteristically, his favourite foods. What better way to a man’s heart than through his stomach.
It’s empathy, not pity, though no one’s brought up that point to make things more dramatic and interesting… Yui takes it upon herself to approach Hades and show that he’s doesn’t have to bind himself to eternal loneliness. Yui doesn’t believe Hades at first but after getting hit with a softball courtesy of Baldr (really Bal-Bal? The ball’s charmed by Yui so much so it just had to hit her?), then a tennis ball courtesy of Apollon and eventually hosed down by Dee-dee Dionysus (Apollon’s really got a knack for cute nicknames), she realises it might be true and feels bad/sad for the guy who chooses solitarity. That said, it’s still hilarious to me every time he says, ‘stay away!’ so dramatically. We’ve seen him keep his distance from Yui and everyone else because misfortune follows him everywhere. Gotta admit, I actually felt bad for the guy by the end of this episode in spite of the corny goose bump inducing script writing. So where better to start things off than on a depressive note with emo child Hades.
